DOS Farewell

To me, one of the best things about the Pacific Northwest has been the Department of Safety in Anacortes, WA. It is an amazing place – part music venue, part art gallery, and part social centre for indie culture between the hubs of Vancouver and Seattle. It was surprising and sad to get an email a few days ago from them announcing that they were shutting down:

This song reminds me of university

Today Coconut Records tweeted about how they find Matthew Sweet’s video for “Sick of Myself” inspirational for their video/music work.  I had totally forgotten about how great this song is – check it out – blast from the past (past meaning the 90s):

Good to see on his wiki page that he still records and tours, plus he had his song “Girlfriend” on Guitar Hero II (although this song would have been even good too)

Also discovered that Death Cab for Cutie did a cover of the song recently – seems like a dream match up on paper, but I can’t help but like the original much better than this slowed down pretty version (although it’s really interesting to hear). It can be found on the Hype Machine.

Who climbs Everest twice?

For the past 3 weeks, I’ve been in a work-mandated program to boost my Guitar Hero skills. By work-mandated, I mean every day at quitting time, several regulars in my office hit the entertainment area to take turns battling each other until our appetites for bad classic rock/destruction are completely sated, or someone gets called to come home.

But due to a major development over the holidays, I’m seriously contemplating retiring from the game.
