DOS Farewell

To me, one of the best things about the Pacific Northwest has been the Department of Safety in Anacortes, WA. It is an amazing place – part music venue, part art gallery, and part social centre for indie culture between the hubs of Vancouver and Seattle. It was surprising and sad to get an email a few days ago from them announcing that they were shutting down:

Comics noir

The first book I have finished in 2010 is the epic graphic novel A Drifting Life, a memoir by Yoshihiro Tatsumi. I first came across his work via being a fan of Adrian Tomine, who introduced Tatsumi’s earlier work to N. American audiences by getting his publisher Drawn & Quarterly to publish them. I’ve read Abandon the Old in Tokyo: Stories, Good-Bye, and The Push-Man and Other Stories, all of which present a gritty and often grim picture of 1970s Japanese city life.
